DIRECT-TO-GARMENT (DTG): DIGITAL MAGIC FOR DETAILS

Printer jets full-color ink right onto the garment like a high-res fabric printer.

PROS:

Unlimited colors, gradients, photos – photorealistic detail
Soft hand-feel
No setup fees
Ideal for small runs or complex art

CONS:

Best on cotton blends (less pop on synthetics)
Slightly less durable than screen for heavy abuse

WHEN TO CHOOSE:

Choose DTG when you need full-color, photo-quality prints on small runs of tees and hoodies. It lays ink directly on the fabric, so detailed artwork and gradients look sharp

HEAT TRANSFER (VINYL / HTV or PAPER TRANSFERS)

Design printed on transfer paper or cut vinyl, then heat-pressed onto item.

PROS:

Low startup cost
Quick for small runs
Works on many materials

CONS:

Can crack/peel over time
Less durable than screen or DTF
Limited detail on complex designs

PAD PRINTING

CONS:

Usually 1–4 colors max

not ideal for large areas.

WHEN TO CHOOSE:

LASER ENGRAVING (ETCHING)

Laser burns or removes surface material to create a permanent mark.

PROS:

Completely permanent (no fading)
highly professional and precise
Works on metal, wood, leather, glass, etc.
No ink or plates needed.

CONS:

No color (monochrome only)
More expensive
Visibility limited at distance; can’t do photos well.

WHEN TO CHOOSE:

Stainless steel drink-ware, leather products, awards and other things made of wood or glass.

DYE SUBLIMATION

Dye turns to gas under heat and bonds into polyester fibers (all-over possible).

PROS:

Completely soft/no hand-feel
Permanent and wash-proof (won’t crack/peel)
Vibrant colors and gradients
Can do edge-to-edge/all-over prints.

CONS:

Only works on light-colored polyester/synthetic fabrics (white or light only)
Needs special substrates for hard goods
Equipment-intensive

WHEN TO CHOOSE:

All-over prints on sports jerseys, performance apparel, flags, table covers, or hard goods like ceramic mugs/coasters (with coating). Ideal for athletic or vibrant lifestyle brands.

FULL COLOR DIGITAL (CMYK PRINTING)

Direct digital printing (inkjet/laser) onto flat surfaces or labels.

PROS:

True full-color
Photos friendly
Fast

CONS:

Limited to flat or label-friendly items
Can be costly on fabric
Durability varies by substrate

WHEN TO CHOOSE:

Choose full-color CMYK when your design has photos, gradients, or more colors than a few spot inks can handle. It reproduces rich, detailed artwork without extra screens or color limits.

DIRECT-TO-FILM (DTF)

Design is printed on a special film, powdered, cured, then heat-transferred to the garment.

PROS:

Works on almost any fabric (cotton, poly, blends, darks/lights)
Vibrant and highly durable; full-color with no pretreatment
Versatile for small-to-medium runs

CONS:

Slightly thicker/stiffer hand-feel than DTG
Higher material cost than basic heat transfer
Not as “invisible” as sublimation

WHEN TO CHOOSE:

Choose DTF when you want full-color prints that work on more fabrics than DTG, including darks and blends. The design is printed on film, then heat-pressed on, so small runs stay vibrant and flexible
